As mentioned previously, after watching the film, I decided to check out Conclave by Robert Harris.

There are a few differences between the novel and the film, but mostly they're minor changes (Lawrence = Lomeli in the novel, Benitez is Filipino in the novel rather than Mexican, etc). I do seem to recall that the turtle scene wasn't in the book; I'm kind of surprised that they added that for the movie, but it was a lovely character moment and Benitez looks kind of like a romance film protagonist in that scene, so I'm certainly not complaining.

Some of the scenes were more effective in the movie than the novel, I think. But that could be due to acting and directorial choices and so on. The one that comes to mind is the saying grace scene after Benitez is introduced to everyone - in the novel, Benitez just says the whole thing, and that's that. But in the film, he pauses after saying the usual spiel, and everyone thinks he's finished and starts to sit down - but then he continues, thanking the Sisters and reminding the others of the impoverished etc, and the effect is very striking.

There are some differences between the novel and the film that I did find interesting, even if the change doesn't affect the overall plot.

Continued, spoilers )

Overall, I wouldn't say that the novel is a must-read if you liked the film, but I enjoyed it a lot and I think that if you wanted more after watching the movie, it's a good direction to go. Plus you get more into Lomeli's (Lawrence)'s head, etc. On the reverse, I don't think I would actually recommend it without seeing the film first, because the film really is rather good and there are a few things that I thought it did better. (Though I might be biased.)

Conclave - Delectatio Morosa - fanVN

Apparently there is a fanmade visual novel for Conclave (I found about it through the development tumblr here). It's called Delectatio Morosa. [Info]

...I... kind of want to play it?

This movie sank its claws into me in the weirdest way and now I want more. I don't know how this happened.

I have read the book and now I kind of want to rewatch the movie, though admittedly that is partially because I want to thirst after Carlos Diehz. I don't know what it is exactly but he is absolutely magnetic as Vincent Benitez.

....Maybe I will play the game too. If I can find time.

I have been wanting to get back into writing for a while as it has been a few years and I have missed it. I have also greatly missed H/C bingo and so when I saw [personal profile] spikedluv post on her blog about [community profile] genprompt_bingo I thought I would give it a try as it looked similar while at the same time being more lowkey so I could take my time.  So, I signed up and I got a card:

Scars The Tower Contentment Hurt / Comfort Dystopias
Africa Alexithymia (Obscured Emotions) Drunkeness and Inebriation Antarctica Aliens
Frankencritters Thrills (Speed / Danger / Daring) Wild CardEmpathy Elves, Fairies, Pixies and Brownies
Isolation / Loneliness Spiders (Giant, Radioactive, or otherwise unusual) Anhedonia (Lack of Pleasure) Dark Alley The Will to Live
Slum Identity Crisis Dark Tone Loss of Faith Freckles

I like it.  I think I could work with this one. I especially like the elves, fairies, brownies, pixies square, and the h/c one is always a favorite.

Hopefully it gives me the impetus I need to start again.

What are your current writing aspirations?

I signed up for [community profile] getyourwordsout's microfiction dice challenge and got "75 words" as my challenge.

Decided on a peek back at Renaud's Family, my vampires who were born on the [community profile] threesentenceficathon earlier this year.

Proposal

Featuring: Renaud, Sylvester, Amalia
Rating: G
Wordcount: 75

‟What precisely are you suggesting, Amalia?” Renaud asked, arching a brow and running his fingers through his Grand-Childe’s hair.

Sylvester sighed without waking, formless shifting nestling his cheek closer in Renaud’s lap, and he purred quietly to soothe the youngster.

Amalia raised her hands, palms up. ‟Merely that you are one of our eldest . . . and least likely to bow without good reason,” she paused, with a wry smile, ‟any reason. We could use your aid.”

I'm feeling very discouraged about the upcoming federal election. And I don't just mean like, on the big picture level, but at the local level.

My district will go to the Conservative candidate no matter what. This is northern Alberta; enough said. Even so, I'm disappointed that the other candidates aren't making more of an effort. People shouldn't have to go digging for information about why they should vote for you in particular to represent them (rather than just looking up the general party platform); it should be easy to access.

Additionally, some of the candidates don't even live in the riding*. FIFO (fly-in, fly-out) is a sore spot up here even when talking about regular workers; there is no way anybody in Fort Mac is going to vote for a candidate who doesn't have ties to the region.

Some things I'm taking into consideration are:
Which party aligns closest with my values?
Which non-Conservative party do I think is most likely to win nationally?
Which candidate for my riding do I actually like the best and would theoretically want to represent me based on the information that I have?

Unfortunately, the answers to those questions are all different. But advance voting opens tomorrow morning, so I guess I'll come to a decision soon.

Even though there is unlikely to be a shakeup here, I hope that there will be enough non-CPC votes that the other parties will take that into account and at least make more of an attempt in this region next time.

On the subject of the Conservative candidate for my region - I've been a little frustrated about this. I was speaking recently with some people who will not be voting for her, which is great. But the only thing they're interested in discussing is the fact that she's related to someone who has a criminal record. As far as I know, Laila Goodridge was not involved in the robbery*. There is plenty to criticize her for on her own merits and her party's merits, and personally I don't think we should take her family member's actions into account here.

Let us begin with the formal dissolution of NaNoWriMo, after several bad decisions, scandals, and questionable alliances had many of the participants moving away from the official forums or having official affiliations with the group.

[personal profile] musesfool gives us a poem from Barbara Jane Reyes that is a prayer to the Goddess of Lost Things, but the things that are lost are not merely the things that are physical, and several of the lost things are misplaced at a time where they are needed.

Social media influencers and thrill-seekers are still attempting to make contact with isolated peoples that have expressed a wish to stay isolated. Because the clicks and the potential revenue are worth more than the violation of international treaty, right? Or the possibility of bringing a disease with you that the isolated people have no defense against.

Obscenely wealthy person plans on going to another country because she's no longer getting a tax-preferred status, tries to soften the headline by claiming she'd be happy to pay more tax to maintain her preferred status.

There are burgeoning services for Catholic parishes, dioceses, and schools, to help make sure there isn't financial malfeasance and to give transparency and communication between clergy and laity to make those places work better for everyone. A far cry, indeed, from the Church that expected the laity to attend, say the appropriate prayers at the appropriate time, and otherwise just trust that the men who were priests and administrators were going to do well with it, even in the face of evidence to the contrary.

There are a lot of people out there who want the "right" people to have more children, and to have designer babies, and while many of them are also allegiants of eugenetics, people who decry the presence of women in the workplace (or doing anything other than popping out babies and raising them), and ideologies that praise white culture over any and all others, most of them also don't have a thought in their heads about what it would take to actually successfully raise all those kids. They've gotten to "Well, women should do it, because the only women we want are women who will enjoy having and raising children," and they think that will be sufficient as a national policy. Unfortunately for them, history did not begin in the 1950s, and therefore what they believe is timeless and traditional is actually quite newfangled and not very good for a lot of the population.

The National Health Service of the UK has announced that emergency contraception will be available at all community pharmacies for no charge, so as to try and alleviate some of the effects of variations in access and cost. This goes with plenty of other contraception available for no charge through the NHS.

Microsoft employees who protested the company's involvement in allowing Israel to prosecute its war against Gaza received retaliation for their act, either being ordered to retire a few days earlier or fired from their position.

Your semi-monthly dose of U.S. politics, technology hacks, and people behaving poorly inside )

Last out for tonight, the trend of staying and living at your parents house for longer has been happening for quite some time, admittedly because there's less pressure for someone to leave and get an education, or to leave and put themselves into service in some other household. The people who are gung-ho about repealing child labor laws are probably hoping they can point to this kind of research and call it natural for children to go to work, never mind all the laws that are in place to prevent the exploitation of children and to make sure that they get enough sleep to go to their required schooling the next day.

And something to make you smile - a project to connect children to elders in Saidosho by turning the elders into trading card characters has worked extraordinarily well, with an entire TCG developing of these various community members and their skills.

Worked on some fic today for the first time in, uh, months. Wasn't even writing per se, just typing up a draft that I finished last year. It felt really good to work on something, though.

Due to my drastically reduced free time, I guess I need to make more effort to slip this kind of thing in whenever possible. It will probably help that it's much warmer now - It's easier to motivate myself to walk down to the cafe and sit down and work on things and not do anything else for an hour or two. On the weekend, that is.

This year will probably be no exchanges for me once again. But I do want to participate in [community profile] iddyiddybangbang though. There is one draft that I think will be just long enough. Obviously it's still a while before that event, but since time is at a premium, I might as well start thinking about it now.

Most years, I have a spreadsheet that I use to keep track of my writing progress, but I think I will not do that this year. Given it's been several months of nothing, it seems a little silly to set a wordcount goal. Instead, I'll just try to finish one or two things. Keep it manageable and achievable, y'know.

Anyway, I'm glad that An Attempt Was Made. And the stuff I was working on was pretty good, too. Hooray.

I liked The Librarians, I didn't know it was being rebooted. I don't recognize any of the actors, except of course Christian Kane who I assume will only be in the pilot episode or make sporadic appearances. But still...books! Magic! Defeating evil! These things work for me.

I was thinking recently I seem to be watching mostly crime procedurals, I wouldn't mind a new SF/Fantasy oriented type show, and here one is.

I feel some others have mentioned enjoying The Librarians. Y'all may be more in the know than I am, but if you weren't, now you are! Fingers crossed for a decent reboot.

Things I did today

+ Took today off because I Felt Like It. Plus I had to go to an appointment. (Didn't need the whole day for that, but like, figured I might as well....) Also, treated to myself to lunch, just because I could. Felt nice!

+ Repotted two of my plants. Two others got the boot - the pepperomia and the oyster plant are gonzo. I probably could have saved them, like I did last year when they were struggling, but I didn't feel motivated enough to make the effort. So, now I'm down to a christmas cactus and two snake plants. Not sure what I will replace the other two with. Last year I'd considered picking up one of the hens&chicks that the garden centre was selling, and just keep it as an indoor plant; I might end up actually doing that. It seems that plants that tolerate dryness and cold do well in my apartment.

+ Made lentil burgers. Used this recipe from Occasionally Eggs. Tasted pretty good; would make again. Next time I might mix it up a little - different spices, maybe include some diced bell pepper. Though, I really suck at making patties. Maybe that's something that comes with practice? I've only tried making burgers a few times.

+ Took the book version of Conclave out from the library. Looking forward to it. The movie was pretty good, but the nice thing about books is that you usually get more deeply into at least one character's head.

+ I was surprised to see a lot of people on the Latest Things page posting their first entry in a new journal. Turns out some people are considering making a jump from Tumblr to DW due to some issues going on over there (staff layoffs etc). Well, DW's a very different kind of site, but I hope they enjoy it. I think it would be a good match for people who like textposting.

Trailer is up! It looks good to me! Admittedly, it looks funnier than I would have expected from the books but omg, I could use some more laughs these days, I'm good with that.
